Laura has recently completed another painting. Measuring 28 and 3/4 inches (73cm) tall, this acrylic painting has a working title of "Personage With Red Hat". Laura says, "maybe it should be called, "Colourful Painting", because that is what I wanted to do."

Laura has nearly completed another painting.

Paintings take time, but this one is looking nice!

The framed painting on the wall behind is "Hope Springs Eternal" that was completed around September or October of last year. Most of Laura's paintings are displayed unframed, but this one seemed to suit it.

Portrait of an Architect

Laura was commissioned to do a portrait of a retired architect for his birthday. Laura had just over a fortnight to do the painting in time for the birthday celebration, and varnishing took place on the day before the event! Instead of attempting a "likeness" in the usual way, Laura has made up an image of the person, by depicting tools of their trade, and items that express their interests. The painting was in acrylic on MDF board and measured approximately one metre (39 inches) high.

Latest Painting: "A Love Token"

Laura is currently working on "A Love Token". I asked Laura, "Where do the ideas come from?" Laura never finds it easy to put the paintings into words, but a little stream of conciousness followed, that was something like this... "Thoughts about Mermaids and Sailors, and myths about Sirens. Two worlds not able to meet, the love of the sailor for the Mermaid and the Mermaid for the sailor. Has she sunk him with her anchor? Or is the anchor something he made for her? A sailor sometimes made love tokens for his sweetheart whilst away on long voyages."

A Painting: The Bedroom Screen.

Here are some photos of a decorative screen that Laura
was commissioned to paint.
The commission was finished just before Christmas.
The painting was done in artist quality acrylic on
customwood (MDF) panels. Each panel is 1.2 m
high (four feet). The background of the figures is in
acrylic gold luster, and glows looks almost like real gold
under artificial light. Peter did the woodwork for the screen
in oiled Macrocarpa. It was a challenge for both of us;
for Peter, learning to use a router, and for Laura working on
a larger scale than she is used to.
